Other Memberships
The Expert Witness Institute (EWI), London, England.
In 2001, NADE had its annual conference in Crawley, England. We were introduced to EWI. One of its founders, Sir Michael Davies, was judge in our moot court for oral examination of candidates for certification. I was privileged to be accepted for membership, and I prize EWI publications on expert witnessing.
American Handwriting Analysis Foundation (AHAF).
As librarian I have had occasion to assist enquiries from students in higher education and attorneys at law researching technical matters relating to handwriting.
Special Member, Vidocq Society, Philadelphia, PA.
Vidocq Society is named for a French detective who began as a master criminal. Being caught, he turned his talents to bringing criminals to justice. He is considered the founder of modern criminalistics and a model for Sherlock Holmes. Members offer a variety and depth of talent to solve cold murder cases. They are based in Philadelphia.
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Member, Committee E30 on Forensic Sciences.
ASTM is a non-governmental organization that writes standards in virtually every industry. Its membership and activity are international. Committee E30.02 focuses on document examination. When approved, standards for document examination are published in an annual volume designated 14.02. An attorney who employs or cross-examines expert witnesses of any type would do well to consult the relevant ASTM standards.
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
My principal motive for joining AAAS is to receive Science, their official journal. It is sobering to be exposed to such a wealth of knowledge in myriad sciences one knows little about. It is protection against the temptation of intellectual arrogance.
